Holiday Driving Tips to Stay Safe this Season

Social Graphic 2025_elf

Whenever an accident occurs on I-10 in Louisiana, the chance for traffic backing up and causing more problems is high. Thanks to all the waterways the road has to cross, there isn’t a lot of room to go onto the shoulder, if there even is one at all. This makes little room for errors.

That’s one reason why holiday traffic on the road is so delayed, and perilous. One brief shutdown, as reported by The Advocate, caused seven miles of backup after a serious injury crash between the Bluff Road overpass and Highland Road. This happened the same day as the semi crash that we talked about earlier this week when an 18-wheeler crashed on the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge.

Over a hundred million Americans take long journeys to see family during the end of the year for Christmas and New Year’s Day, most of them by car. All this traffic raises the chances of an accident. Here are some tips to stay safe when traveling during heavy traffic seasons.

  • Keep your car in good repair, so a breakdown doesn’t slow you down.
  • Use GPS to reduce driver distractions. The more you can keep your eyes on the road rather than a map, the better.
  • Never text and drive for any reason. Many states make it illegal.
  • Stop before you get tired and take a break at least every two hours for 15 minutes to reduce driver fatigue. Driving while tired is as bad as driving drunk.
