Deadly Crash on I-55 in St. John the Baptist Parish Involving Super Fog

On Monday morning, October 23rd, at least 7 people were killed and 25 injured in a pileup on the I-55 in St. John the Baptist Parish due to low visibility caused by smoke and fog. Louisiana police have noted that the death toll could climb as more cars are searched. They reported over 158 vehicles were involved in the crash, according to WDSU6

While the exact cause of the accident has not yet been identified, the National Weather Service noted that a combination of wetland fires and fog reduced visibility, causing there to be a “superfog”. State police are continuing to investigate the bridges and interstate for causation.

Drivers reported that they could not see cars ahead of them, contributing to the size of the tragic pileup, as drivers could not hit their breaks in time, according to Fox Weather.
