Purchasing a New Vehicle? Watch out for These 10 Common Defects

You might assume that buying a new vehicle would be far safer than purchasing a used car. Although this is usually true, some new vehicles have dangerous defects that cause serious accidents and fatal injuries.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were at least 63.9 million vehicles recalled in 2014. The reasons for these vehicle recalls ranged from brake failure to airbag malfunctions and faulty seat belts.

If you purchase a new car, it is a good idea to subscribe to the NHTSA’s recall notification email system. That way, you will receive prompt notice if your vehicle is recalled by either the manufacturer or the NHTSA.

Unfortunately, many drivers do not learn about vehicle recalls until it is too late. If you were injured or lost a family member due to a vehicle defect, you may have grounds for a claim.

Recovering fair compensation in a product liability case is a legally complicated endeavor. You or your accident lawyer will have to identify the liable party based on the specific cause of your defect. You may have grounds for a claim against an engineer, designer, manufacturer, distributor, vendor, or a related party.

You will also need evidence to prove that the defect caused your injury or loss. This is where a car wreck attorney can help.

According to the American Automobile Association, the average motorist in the United States drives approximately 26 miles and spends nearly 46 minutes on the road every day. That adds up to about 280 hours behind the wheel per year.

With so much driving experience, it’s easy to feel safe and become complacent – especially if you are in a new car. Unfortunately, a single defective part is all it takes to cause a serious collision.

Although any auto part can be defective, the following 10 issues are particularly common in new vehicles:

  1. Airbags that activate for no reason;
  2. Airbags that project shrapnel when they activate;
  3. Defective windshield wipers that do not clear the windshield sufficiently;
  4. Tires that lose their tread too quickly;
  5. Defective brakes;
  6. Wheels that crack under pressure;
  7. Defective seats that prevent the driver from operating the car properly;
  8. Accelerator pedals that stick;
  9. Steering wheels that detach; and
  10. Engines that stall for no reason.

The reassurance from Digger and his staff gave me that renewed hope that it’s going to be okay down the road.
