Further Increases in High-Tide Flooding Projected Over Next 30 Years

Further increases in high-tide flooding projected over the next 30 years threaten U.S. coastal communities, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). By 2030, rising sea levels could increase the annual national median frequency rate to 15 days. By 2050, that rate could reach 25 to 75 days a year, depending on the specific location.

In 2020, the Western Gulf, Eastern Gulf, and Southeast Atlantic coasts saw the most high-tide flooding. Fourteen locations in those areas broke or tied the historical record for high-tide flooding. In light of such trends, the task of implementing mitigation strategies falls on the local government in these communities.

The Next 30 Years of Projected Sea Level Rise

NOAA predicts an average sea level rise of 10-12 inches along coastlines over the next 30 years. Further increases in high-tide flooding projected over the next 30 years will also begin to threaten inland communities.

Storm surge heights will increase, and the damage left in their wake could be severe. For example, coastal erosion, emerging groundwater, and saltwater intrusion pose great hazards to coastal communities.

Interagency efforts to track sea level rise are underway. The advent of satellite imagery tracking global ocean levels and ice sheet thickness should help agencies monitor vulnerable areas. Still, mitigation strategies will be needed to combat the further increases in high-tide flooding over the next 30 years. Otherwise, coastal communities will be in a bind when it comes to flood damage.

How Further Increases in High-Tide Floods Will Affect Louisiana

According to USA Today, the NOAA station on Grand Isle, LA, is projected to see 146 to 201 days of high-tide flooding by 2050. On these days, flooding could even reach up to two feet above normal high tide levels. Back in 2020, the projection was between five and six days.

These figures suggest a dramatic increase in high-tide flooding over the next 30 years in Louisiana. Residents and business owners may be unprepared to meet such risks of flood damage, especially during storm surge seasons.

Homeowners Insurance Does Not Typically Cover Damage from High-Tide Flooding in Louisiana

Making an insurance claim for flood damage in Louisiana can get complicated. Homeowners insurance usually does not cover flood damage, so you will have to purchase a separate policy for such coverage.

Insurers may argue over what exactly caused the flood damage. For example, flooding from storm surges and rising water levels is typically not covered in a standard homeowners insurance policy. If rain floods your home due to damages to your roof or walls during a storm, this may be covered, though.

Regardless of the policies you have, insurers may attempt to undervalue or outright deny your claim. If this happens, we can negotiate for a fair settlement or take legal action on your behalf.

The reassurance from Digger and his staff gave me that renewed hope that it’s going to be okay down the road.
