As the nation’s opioid epidemic continues to gain media attention, the factors that have caused such a wide-spread distribution of oxycodone and hydrocodone pills are beginning to emerge. Over-prescribing and overuse have commonly been blamed for the crisis, but new data may show otherwise.
The Drug Enforcement Administration keeps a database of prescription pain pills sold in any given town or city. This particular set of data showed the average yearly totals per person, per year, and by county. The data also tracked the manufacturers and distributors of these drugs. This information revealed a dangerous pattern from pharmaceutical giants to everyday pharmacies.
The Washington Post compiled the data and showed that from 2006 to 2012, only six companies were responsible for distributing 75% of these pills. Those companies included McKesson Corp., Walgreens, Cardinal Health, AmerisourceBergen, CVS, and Walmart. Additionally, just three companies, SpecGx, Actavis Pharma, and Par Pharmaceutical, manufactured 88% percent of all opioids distributed.

ClientAs the rate of deaths due to opioids skyrockets, the need for action is more crucial than ever. Thousands of lawsuits have been filed, but there is not yet sweeping action to curb this epidemic. The ten companies mentioned above and others are now being sued in a Cleveland federal court by almost 2000 localities affected by the crisis. The lawsuits allege that pharmaceutical manufacturers and distributors have gone too far in marketing and selling these addictive drugs and must be held accountable.
I thank God for Digger & David. I don’t know what we would have done if it hadn’t have been for them.
