What commuters have been fearing recently has come to pass. A delay has been announced for continuing repairs on the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge. KATC reported on the delay.
The work from mile marker 127 to mile marker 125 has been cancelled for the weekend of the 24th-27th. This means that there will be no lane closure this weekend. The closure has been moved to the weekend after. No announcement was made about the reason for the delay.
The new closure will be on I-10 West from 9 PM on Friday, January 31st, to 6 AM on Monday, February 3rd.
The reason for the closures is to rehab a portion of the bridge that was damaged by a truck fire last year. The existing deck surface will be remilled and replaced with a modified latex concrete pavement.
This is considered an emergency repair. The concrete was beginning to flake off from the fire damage and the traffic. Had it been allowed to continue, it could have destroyed that section of the bridge.
If you need to commute over the bridge, officials recommend using LA 415 to U.S. 190 to I-49 and back to I-10. Be sure to give yourself plenty of time, as the detour is sure to be crowded.
