Fog Causes Crash Near I-10/310 Split

cars driving in fog

Foggy roads are a major cause of accidents near the coast of Louisiana. Yesterday was a case in point. If you were out on the roads yesterday, you couldn’t help but notice the heavy fog blanketing the area.

WGNO reported that I-10 West was a mess yesterday during morning rush hour as you left New Orleans. There was a crash near the I-10/310 split, likely due to the fog, that backed up traffic all the way to Williams Boulevard in Kenner. All of the lanes were blocked.

Pay attention to the fog reports. Leaving early enough to navigate slowly through the fog won’t just save your job. It could save your life and the lives of other drivers. Here are some tips for driving safely through fog.

  • Never use your high beams if you’re in fog. Only use your low beam and fog lights for navigation. High beams will reflect off the fog and make it hard to see.
  • Roll down your window. You may get damp, but it will make it easier to listen for other cars and emergency vehicles. You should also turn off your radio to minimize distractions.
  • Turn on your wipers and the defroster. This will reduce the level of moisture on the windshield and improve visibility.
  • If at all possible, use the right-hand lane. You can usually use the solid white line as a guide so you don’t drift into another lane accidentally.
