Car Fire On I-10 West Near Ramah, No Injuries Reported

We’ve been talking about delays on the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge due to resurfacing after a car fire last year. Now there’s been a second car fire, though much smaller than the one involving a lumber load. WBRZ reported on the incident.

The car fire happened on I-10 West on Monday. The fire happened on the bridge around mile marker 132 near Ramah. Traffic was backed up for three miles while first responders took care of the fire. No one was reported injured by the fire.

A vehicle fire can be very scary when it happens. If you are in the car when one happens, get over to the shoulder of the road as soon as you can and turn off the ignition. That will stop the fuel pump from adding more fuel to the fire.

Once this is done, get everyone out of the car and move back at least 100 feet downwind from the vehicle. Then call 911 to report the fire. Do not allow anyone to get near the car until the fire department comes to douse the flames.

It may surprise you to know that only a small percentage of car fires happen from accidents. Most are from mechanical and electrical failures. However, most of the fatalities from car fires do happen when they’re caused by an accident.
