He also received a Certificate in Civil Law Studies, reflecting focused academic training relevant to Louisiana practice. He was admitted to the Louisiana Bar in 2022 and is a member of the Louisiana State Bar Association, Lafayette Bar Association, and the Louisiana Association for Justice.

In addition to his legal work, Derek has been involved in community service efforts, including volunteering with the Wheels for Heroes Committee, which provides free wills to firefighters, first responders, and veterans. He has also participated in a volunteer adoption program in Mississippi.

Originally from Iota, Louisiana, Derek enjoys spending time outdoors, trap and skeet shooting, cooking, traveling, and reading — especially works by J.R.R. Tolkien. He also enjoys building and updating computers and spends his downtime with his French Bulldog, Theodore.
