Standing up for injured offshore workers across the Gulf Coast.
Understanding Your Rights Under the Jones Act
The Jones Act offers powerful protections for offshore workers who suffer injuries due to unsafe conditions or employer negligence. To qualify, you must meet the legal definition of a seaman, which generally requires that you:
- Spend at least 30 percent of your working time on a vessel in navigation
- Contribute to the mission of the vessel or fleet
- Work for a United States company as a citizen or legal alien
Many oil rig workers qualify, including drillers, roustabouts, crane operators, floorhands, electricians, derrick operators, and others whose duties take place aboard movable rigs or marine vessels servicing platforms. If you meet these criteria, you may pursue compensation directly from your employer, often far exceeding what land-based workers receive.
