How Does Lane Departure Warning Work and Does It Prevent Accidents?

According to National Public Radio, the average car on the road today is more than 10 years old. Automotive technology has improved a lot in the past decade, especially when it comes to safety features such as blind spot detection and collision mitigation, but this statistic highlights the fact that even if your vehicle has all the latest safety features, the other cars around you probably do not.

Fortunately, features like lane departure warning (LDW) and pedestrian detection are becoming more popular, and you can install these systems in older vehicles. At the end of the day, the more cars that have these kinds of safety features, the safer the roads will be for everyone.

LDW and pedestrian detection can both prevent collisions and reduce their severity when they do occur. In fact, according to the American Automobile Association, researchers estimate that LDW has the potential to reduce fatalities in head-on collisions by more than 40 percent. In the meantime, though, preventable car accidents remain a very real problem around the country.

How Does Lane Departure Warning Work?

In general, lane departure warning alerts motorists when they are about to veer out of their lane. There are several different versions of the technology, but they all rely on a camera mounted near the rearview mirror.

This camera continuously monitors the markings on the road ahead and signals a warning if their location indicates that the vehicle is drifting. The most basic version of LDW will warn motorists when they drift near, onto, or over the lane markings; however, it is up to the motorist to make the necessary correction by steering back into his or her lane.

If there are no lane markings, this version of LDW will not work, and it may not work if the markings are fairly faded. Weather conditions such as snow and rain can also affect the LDW system because they ultimately affect the camera.

The reassurance from Digger and his staff gave me that renewed hope that it’s going to be okay down the road.

More updated versions of LDW include lane keep assist and lane centering assist. Lane keep assist actually helps the motorist get back in his or her lane after drifting. Lane centering assist is the newest version of the technology and goes one step further by taking a proactive approach to keep the vehicle centered in the lane at all times. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, these LDW systems can prevent sideswiping collisions and rollovers.

If you were hurt in a collision with an inattentive driver who drifted into your lane, turn to Laborde Earles Injury Lawyers for comprehensive legal guidance. Our lawyers have more than 350 years of combined experience representing the injured.
