Equipment Accident Kills Worker on Oil Rig in Gulf of Mexico

KATC reports on an oil rig accident in the Gulf of Mexico that killed one worker on the Petrobras 10,000 drillship. According to investigators, the incident occurred around 4:45 a.m. in an area of the Gulf known as Walker Ridge 469.

Authorities say the death was the result of an equipment-related accident. The deceased worked as a floorhand for Spencer Ogden Ltd. According to The Maritime Executive, at the time of the incident, he was working on the port side of the rig floor and positioned between a stanchion with his back to the retracting skate, when it moved and the loading platform of the skate pinned him against the stanchion.

Reports indicate there was only about 3 inches of clearance between the loading platform and the stanchion. The accident occurred in a “red zone,” an area where entry is controlled.

Offshore oil rigs are notoriously dangerous places to work, which is why companies that employ workers on oil rigs must follow a long list safety practices and procedures. If these procedures are not followed and a worker dies as a result, surviving family members may be able to seek damages.

If your loved one died in an offshore oil rig accident, contact Laborde Earles Injury Lawyers to find out if you may have grounds for a wrongful death claim. A Lafayette injury attorney will provide an honest assessment of your case, identify all potentially liable parties, and help you gather evidence to prove negligence, liability, and the value of your damages. Call 800-522-6733 today to schedule a free initial consultation.

When Is an Employer Liable for Damages after an Offshore Oil Rig Accident?

If an employer’s negligence causes an accident that results in injury or death, the employer may be liable for any damages incurred. For instance, if an employer violates a safety practice or procedure, he or she may be liable for damages.

If your loved one died in a work-related accident, workers’ compensation should pay certain death benefits to cover funeral costs and a portion of the deceased’s wages. However, if the employer’s negligence contributed to the death, you may be able to file additional claims for the emotional trauma you experienced and for all of the lost wages.

The reassurance from Digger and his staff gave me that renewed hope that it’s going to be okay down the road.
