Tragic Head-on Collision Kills One Man, One Woman, and Her Unborn Child

According to U.S. News, a head-on collision involving two vehicles resulted in the deaths of a 34-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman who was seven months pregnant. The accident happened earlier this month on a Saturday morning shortly after 9 a.m. in eastern New Orleans.

Local police determined that the victims were traveling in a sedan on Highway 11 when a pickup truck driving in the other direction crossed over the median into oncoming traffic, striking their vehicle. Responders transported the man and woman to a local hospital, where doctors pronounced them and the unborn child deceased.

The motorist of the pickup truck and a passenger who had been riding in the vehicle at the time survived the crash. Chemical tests are pending, and the investigation remains ongoing.

What Are Some of the Most Common Causes of Head-on Collisions?

Head-on collisions often result in fatalities because of their abrupt nature. When two objects traveling in opposite directions strike each other, all forward motion stops instantly, and it is akin to hitting a solid brick wall.

Wrong-way accidents are so often devastating that driving instructors actually teach their students to avoid them at all costs. For example, if a collision is inevitable but you have enough time to “choose” the accident, you will almost always fare better by striking a parked car on your right than you would by hitting a vehicle heading straight toward you on your left.

Fortunately, you can reduce the risk of getting into a head-on collision by knowing some of the most common causes and taking measures to avoid them. These include:

  • Traveling in the wrong direction on a one-way street or ramp;
  • Focusing on anything other than the road ahead and crossing the centerline into oncoming traffic as a result;
  • Passing improperly or recklessly on a two-lane road;
  • Driving while drowsy and drifting into oncoming traffic after falling asleep at the wheel;
  • Speeding around a sharp curve; and
  • Driving while impaired and being unable to stay in the proper lane as a result.

Individuals who are fortunate enough to survive head-on collisions often sustain debilitating injuries that may not ever heal entirely. If you were hurt in a wrong-way accident and want to hold the liable party financially accountable, contact Laborde Earles Injury Lawyers.

Our award-winning team is relentless when it comes to helping clients secure the compensation they deserve. Call 800-522-6733 to schedule a free consultation with an accident attorney in Lafayette.
